Murray Gibson obtained his PhD with Archie Howie at the University of Cambridge in 1978 and emigrated to the US, where he has worked for IBM, Bell Labs, three universities, a national laboratory and is now at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in Tallahassee FL. His research focuses on quantitative electron microscopy of semiconductors and amorphous materials. Notable breakthroughs include atomic imaging of semiconductor quantum dots, in-situ HREM of MBE growth, and origination of the DOE TEAM microscope project. Since 2000 he has served twice as a dean and was Director of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory
