Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon is an internationally recognized materials data scientist who leverages artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of functional materials for critical energy and national security missions. His pioneering advancements in autonomous materials science have been recognized with the Microscopy Society of America's Burton Medal and a prestigious R&D 100 Award for developing an autonomous electron microscope. A prolific researcher, he has secured over $5 million in funding, authored more than 85 publications, and developed multiple software packages and two successfully commercialized technologies. Through his roles at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and a joint appointment at the Colorado School of Mines, he helps lead the $14M APEX DOE Energy Frontier Research Center, guiding the development of next-generation, energy-efficient power electronics. Dr. Spurgeon continues to shape the future of the field by advancing autonomous experimentation and serving in key leadership roles, including for the Microscopy Society of America.
