He holds a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology from the National School of Anthropology and History of Mexico; a Master's degree in History and Ethnohistory from the same institution; and a PhD in Anthropology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He was Curator of the Templo Mayor Museum from 1990 to 1993 and a Research Professor at the National Institute of Anthropology and History, affiliated with the Templo Mayor Museum, since 1993. He has devoted much of his professional career to the research of archaeological shell materials, with particular emphasis on his analysis of collections from the Maya region, Central Mexico, and the Huasteca. His publications include "Typology of Shell Objects from the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan," "The Symbolism of Shell Objects from the Offerings Found in the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan," and "The Specialized Production of Shell Objects from the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan." He won the honorable mention of the Alfonso Caso Prize in the master's thesis category in archaeology in 1999, and first place for his doctoral thesis in 2005. He was awarded the Alfonso Caso Medal by the National Autonomous University of Mexico as the most distinguished doctoral student of his generation in 2006. He currently coordinates the project "Manufacturing Techniques for Shell Objects from Pre-Hispanic Mexico" and is a Level II National Researcher in the National System of Researchers.
