Giovanna Machado has been a Senior Researcher at the Centro de Tecnologias Estratégicas do Nordeste (CETENE) since 2009 and served as its Director from 2020 to 2024, a research unit under Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI). Since 2021, she has held Chair 27 at the Pernambuco Academy of Sciences (APC). She contributes to several national advisory committees and is a member of the Evaluation Committee for Electron Microscopy Proposals at CNPEM.
She has held leadership roles in scientific societies, including Director of the Materials Chemistry Division (2018–2020) and Treasurer (2016–2018) of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). She also served as Secretary (2023–2024) of the Interamerican Committee of Electron Microscopy Societies and is currently President of the Brazilian Society of Microscopy and Microanalysis (SBMM). She is also Editor-in-Chief of the journal Química Nova.
Her research focuses on Materials Science, particularly on the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for renewable energy, photocatalysis, hydrogen production, biomaterials, and wastewater treatment. She has established research groups with national and international recognition, developing technologies aimed at addressing social challenges through replicable, innovative models aligned with public policy.
In 2012, she launched the Futuras Cientistas (Future Scientists) Program, a national initiative promoting the inclusion of female public high school students and teachers in STEM. Through immersive research experiences, the program fosters scientific interest, empowerment, and career aspirations. It was awarded the LED – Luz na Educação Prize by the Roberto Marinho Foundation and serves as a national model for gender-inclusive scientific outreach.
