Francisco Garcia-Sierra earned his Ph.D. in Cell Biology and Neuroscience from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1999. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Binder's laboratory at the Cell and Molecular Department of Northwestern University from 2000 to 2002. In 2009, he took a sabbatical research position at the Prague Psychiatric Center. Since 2002, he has served as the head and principal researcher at the laboratory of Neurodegeneration in the Department of Cell Biology at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City.
His areas of expertise include:
- Molecular mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease.
- Morphological and neuropathological analysis of human brain tissue.
- Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and confocal microscopy of human brain tissue.
- Isolation and biochemical characterization of abnormally aggregated tau and amyloid proteins from the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease.
- In vitro assays to characterize the mechanisms involved in the abnormal proteolysis of tau protein.
- Cell culture and evaluation of the pathological effects caused by the overexpression of modified tau protein in neurons.
